Ceramics as Sculpture in Exhibit at Guilford Art Center
Guilford Art Center announces its latest exhibit, Contemporary Ceramic Sculpture, a national juried show. The exhibit is on view June 18 through July 24 in the Center's Mill Gallery.
Guilford Art Center is well known for its highly-regarded ceramics program, and this exhibit will highlight a variety of sculptural, non-functional approaches to creating with clay. Exhibit juror is Lisa Wolkow, longtime head of the Guilford Art Center ceramics studio, teacher, mentor, and ceramic sculptor. She has selected works by 20 artists from across the country, sculptural forms that illustrate, as she says, "ways in which artists have built upon and transformed the primarily utilitarian roots" of the medium.
Exhibiting artists are Cate Bourke (East Hartford, CT), Barbara Broadwell (Luther, OK), Trisha Coates (Newmarket, NH), Holly Dowidat, Julia Feld (San Jose, CA) Jason Hackett (Richmond, VA), Nancy Hayes (Dartmouth, MA), David Hooker (Wheaton, IL), Virginia Jenkins (Memphis, TN), Andrew Maglathlin (Berkley, MA), Geraldine Marcenyac (Norwalk, CT), Suzanne Mauro (Plymouth, IN), Lady McCrady (Madison, CT), Jonathon McMillan (Rye, NY), Nicole Roberts (St. Peter, MN), Frank Saliani (Brooklyn, NY), Lauren Sandler (Missoula, MT), Diane Sullivan, Zach Tate (Springfield, MO) and Samantha Wickman (Somerville, MA).
The opening reception for Contemporary Ceramic Sculpture is Friday, June 18, 5-7pm. The opening is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 10-4, Saturday 11-4. The exhibit is sponsored, in part, by West's Ceramic Supply.
