Show of Little Works on View
at Guilford Art Center Gallery
Exhibition of Miniatures Features Regional Artists
Visitors will want to look closely at the small and
intriguing little works on view at the Guilford Art
Center for the Exhibition of Miniatures, which takes
place at the Center's Mill Gallery from March 16-April
22, 2007.
Artists from Connecticut, New York and the region
will exhibit their work in this invitational show.
Two- and three-dimensional works in many different
media were selected for the show, among them painting,
sculpture, photography, mixed media, clay and calligraphy.
Participating exhibitors include artists, architects
and other creative persons. Participants were chosen
based upon the style, creativity and ingenuity of
their work, says Shop and Gallery Manager Julienne
Richardson. Interestingly, the featured artists are
not necessarily known for working on a small scale,
but were encouraged to use the Exhibition of Miniatures
as an opportunity to create work that explores that
concept. "Few, if any, of the invited artists, are
miniaturists, per se," explains Richardson. "In inviting
them to exhibit, we hope they will have fun with the
concept of scale as it relates to their usual work,
and as it affects the relationship between their objects
and the viewer."
Artists with works featured in the Exhibition of Miniatures
include: Jay Warren Bright, Tom Edwards, Craig Newick,
Mark Simon, Peter Newman, Gail Friedland, Linda Zimmerman,
Sarah Drought Nebel, Michelle Kaufman, Peter Otis,
Bill Kennedy, Vladimir Shiptalnik, Robert Greenberg,
Kevin Van Aelst, Rex Walden, Molly McDonald, Maureen
Squires, Howard El-Yasin, Harvee Riggs, Bob Gregson,
Jennifer Davies, Laurie Flaherty, Linda Knudsen Westgard,
and Joan Killion. The exhibit selection committee
included architect David Connell, corporate art consultant
and artist Susan Daniel, and writer and art teacher
Amy Peters, as well as Richardson.
The opening reception for the Exhibition of Miniatures
will be on Friday, March 16, from 5-7pm. Gallery hours
are Monday through Saturday 10am-5pm and Sunday 12-4pm.
Admission is free. For more information contact the
