Ekphrastic Poetry, April Break Sessions, Craft Expo News & More

Time for Register for Spring!

Classes and workshops begin end of March, so don’t wait to register! Check out the full catalog online. Some classes have filled but there are plenty of openings in blacksmithing, beading, painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, calligraphy, fiber arts and so much more.

For the Spring, we continue our hybrid program (on-campus and online), with the same safety protocols in place. At this time class sizes continue to be limited, however, we are looking forward to the not-distant future when we can open up classes a bit more.

Financial aid is available.

Guilford Poets Guild & GAC Faculty: Ekphrastic Poetry

Poets and artists alike have been “Keeping On” during the pandemic. Proof can be seen at the Guilford Art Center’s Faculty Exhibit and its accompanying series of poems written by members of the Guilford Poets Guild — both on view through the month of March. The exhibit and poems share how GAC instructors and GPG poets have engaged with their creativity to help them “keep on” during this time of the pandemic.

This is the fourth ekphrastic collaboration between the Guilford Poets Guild and Guilford Art Center, usually culminating in a reading at the Center. This year’s event is virtual, with poems appearing on both organization’s websites throughout the month.

Click here to read the poems.

Ekphrastic poetry is a response to a visual work of art, often a vivid, dramatic work that takes a painting, sculpture, or other artwork as its inspiration.

The GAC gallery is open Wednesday – Friday, 12:00-4:00pm and Saturdays 10:00 am-4:00pm. The gallery is free and open to the community. Mask wearing and social distancing is required upon entry. Click here for more information.

Craft Expo Update

Due to the uncertainties of ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, we regret to announce that Guilford Art Center is not able to hold Craft Expo in 2021.

While health news on the horizon is profoundly positive for this coming summer, an event with the magnitude of Craft Expo requires months (if not a full year!) of preparation. The event’s success depends upon the assurance of full participation by vendors and attendees, which cannot be planned with certainty this year.

We do expect to return to the Guilford Green in 2022 on July 15, 16, 17. Mark your calendars and plan to join us then to celebrate American craft, and the communities of artists, makers and attendees who support it.
Are you an artist and interested in applying for 2022? Click here for more information.

In the meantime, we are hoping to hold a series of Artisan Pop-Ups on our campus throughout the warmer upcoming months. Some of our favorite Craft Expo artists will be participating. Stay tuned for all updates!

“Supporting the Guilford Art Center is an easy “yes,” year after year. Art is important at all age levels, to encourage creativity, express emotion, and bring us joy. Our community is incredibly lucky to have GAC as a resource and we can’t take its presence for granted. GAC is one of the places that enriches Guilford through its classes and events. We choose to support GAC to do our part to insure that the Center is around for generations to come.”
