THANK YOU TO SUZANNE HENS-KAPLAN, GAC CFO & OPERATIONS DIRECTOR

Guilford Art Center’s Operations Director & CFO, Suzanne Hens-Kaplan, is retiring this June, and she will be greatly missed. She is planning to spend more time with her husband and family, including her two young granddaughters and, in the immediate future, enjoy a freer summer schedule for boating on Long Island Sound, one of their favorite activities.

Suzanne has worked at Guilford Art Center for 18 years, first as Finance Manager and as CFO since 2013. Her contributions have been incalculable(!) She has run a fiscally “tight ship” that she helped steer through the 2008 recession on to calmer waters in more recent years. Most significantly, her careful stewardship of a major capital campaign helped GAC achieve its goal of expanding and improving the school building in 2020. Especially during the pandemic, Suzanne navigated GAC through a complicated thicket of government funding that aided enormously in our ability to maintain operations. Her tireless work to always keep GAC on sound financial footing has fueled our impact and programming for the community.

Impressively, Suzanne also has serious “right brain” chops! An ardent maker, she knits, and works with clay, glass, and mosaic. Her fanciful, mixed-media environments were often creative stand-outs in GAC student exhibitions.

Suzanne and I have worked in a directorial partnership that is unusual for an organization. We have very different skill sets and personal styles, but rather than clash, they always meshed in shared decision-making, supported by the work of our “small but mighty” staff and our board. Given our tight-knit community, Suzanne’s retirement leaves a big hole in our hearts and daily lives… but her dedication to GAC has set us up to continue to thrive for the future.

Thank you Suzanne. We will miss you!
Maureen Belden, Executive Director

EMPLOYMENT

Although Suzanne leaves some big shoes to fill(!), we do need to look to replace her on our team. We’ve started the search for a FINANCE & OPERATIONS MANAGER.

The Finance & Operations Manager is responsible for the financial management of the organization, as well as Human Resources Administration and Operations oversight, in order to ensure a strong infrastructure in support of the Center’s mission. Reporting to the Executive Director (ED), the Finance & Operations Manager will support the ED to ensure the Center’s financial stability, operational sustainability, and organizational longevity, and be present at all Finance Committee meetings.
