The Artists of Gallery One & Friends at GAC, April 19 – May 11
Gallery One is a diverse group of established artists who use current modes of expression in a variety of contemporary media. Their common bond is a commitment to each artist’s individual voice and evolution. Each artist represents a different background and tradition which is clearly visible in the art. How each artist interprets the world and works with materials transforms into unique images and the hanging of their artwork intentionally emphasizes connections among various representational and abstract works. Artists: Forrest Bailey, Hayne Bayless, Catherine Christiano, Victor Filepp, Ellen Gaube, Bryan Gorneau, Susan Hickman, Gray Jacobik, Judith Barbour Osborne, Diana Rogers, Rick Silberberg, and Jill Vaughn. Invited Artists: Kathy Axilrod and Diane Brown.
“Art is a way of putting shapes together that carries conviction,” invited artist Kathy Axilrod observes. “One thinks hard while painting, in order to select what is important from the wealth of visual data. This selection is continuous and, as the painting progresses, becomes increasingly challenging. Ultimately, in transmitting the artist’s decisions, it gives the work its individual and expressive content.”
Invited artist Diane Brown states, “My work is inspired by the natural and organic formations, surface patterns and textures found all around us. The process of painting is my focus, not trying to make a specific statement, so I often begin in one place and end up in another with no idea of how I got there or how to “do it again”.
Reception on Friday, April 26 from 5-7pm with Live Jazz by Matt McCauley on bass and Joel Spineti on piano. Closing reception on Saturday, May 11 from 3-5pm with talk by former museum conservator Forrest Bailey, “Answers to Questions You Didn’t Even Know You Had About Painting/Paintings,” of interest to artists and non-artists alike.
