Students will create a small sheepsfoot utility blade, as well as a full steel marlin spike, a pointed tool used for tying and untying rigging knots. Both of these tools are consistent with those carried by English and French sailors of the 18th Century. The class will focus on the fit and finish, functionality, and heat treat of a singular pair of these tools. Students will need safety glasses, dust mask or respirator, leather work gloves, (welding gauntlets not needed) and should wear jeans, a non-flammable cotton shirt and/or jacket, and closed-toed boots or leather shoes. Our forge is an outdoor building that is only semi-enclosed; please dress accordingly.
