YOUTH PROGRAM WEEK 5: JULY 21-25

Art of Africa
Open to ages 8-12
9:00am-12:00pm
Instructor: Bonnie Han

Students will learn about different artistic and cultural traditions throughout the continent of Africa, and make a Wodaabe mirror pouch from Niger, paper beads from Egypt, A Kua-ba dolls from Ghana and much more.

All about Kites
Open to ages 5-7
1:00-4:00pm
Instructor: Eve Schneider

Students will make simple paper kites and learn some sewing and more advanced kite-building skills to build, paint, and decorate beautiful flying sculptures from recycled fabric, bamboo and bicycle spokes. Learn about kite-building traditions and celebrations from different cultures; have fun hand-building with air-dry clay to make and decorate kite winders.

Creative Comics: Session A
Open to ages 8-12

Instructor: David Ferreira

If you have interest in comic books, creating character driven stories and like to draw, this class is for you! Whether you love super-heroes, Manga, Fantasy or the Sunday Funnies, the structure within is the same. Learn about storytelling and pacing, page layout, character design, drawing and composing for comics, simple perspective, inking techniques and lettering. A personal sketchbook is recommended.

Sewing a Summer Crop Top: Session B
Open to ages 8-12

Instructor: Tina McKim

Students will learn the basics of using a sewing machine, stitching technqiues and fabric handling. As they build their skills, they’ll work towards an exciting final project – sewing their very own stylish summer crop top! Perfect for beginners. Encourages creativity, patience and hands-on learning.

BYOB Paint & Sip Workshop: Tarot Told in Paint: Session A
Thursday, July 17

Create a personalized masterpiece inspired by the tarot card of your choice. Whether you resonate with The Lovers, The Moon or The Fool, our guided painting session will help you bring your chosen card to life on canvas. No experience necessary; perfect for a girls’ night out or date night! Must be 21 or older.

Experimental Collage Workshop
Saturday, July 19
12:00-4:00pm
Instructor: Anne Benkovitz

Let your mind and hands wander freely and you might surprise yourself with what you create! Students will construct paper or mixed-media collage artworks by cutting and reassembling colored and textured papers, photos, text, ephemera, etc. Further embellish with paints, markers, stamps, thread, fabrics, etc. All tools and materials provided, but students can bring in items to incorporate.

Tomahawk Forging Workshop
Saturday-Sunday, July 19-20
10:00am-5:00pm
Instructor: Aidan Garrity

Students will forge a tomahawk using the slit and drift method. The instructor will also demonstrate the wrap and weld method and explain the variations. Blacksmithing topics covered will include forming the shape of the head, drifting the eye, fitting a handle, grinding and polishing the bit, heat treating, and sharpening.

Silver Metal Clay II Workshop
Sunday, July 20
10:00am-4:00pm
Instructor: Nancy Karpel

Students will take designing pendants to the next level and learn techniques for forming and firing silver metal clay over support materials for a 3-dimensional look. Additional techniques for forming and attaching bales will be demonstrated and used. Focus will be on perfecting dry finishing the metal clay pendants before firing.
