October Blacksmithing Workshops
 
Did you know that Guilford Art Center operates one of the largest working/teaching forges in Connecticut and the Northeast? And that it’s open to students of all levels and abilities? Come take a class or workshop in the fully-equipped forge and explore blacksmithing, swordsmithing, bladesmithing and metalworking. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. You’ll feel completely welcome regardless if you have experience or are a complete beginner.

Jewelry from the Forge Workshop
Saturday-Sunday, October 2-3, 10:00am-4:00pm
Instructor: Marsha Trattner
 
Make unique jewelry in a unique way – from forged steel. Learn hand forging techniques to transform steel into rings, necklaces and cuffs.
 
 
Open Forge: Session B
4 Wednesdays beginning October 6, 6:00-9:00pm
Instructor: Mace Vitale
 
This time is intended for blacksmithing and bladesmithing students to continue projects they’ve started, or start new projects under the guidance of a working smith. Projects will be tailored to individual students; pre-requesite of a beginner
bladesmith or blacksmith class.
 
 
Making a Tomahawk Workshop
Saturday-Sunday, October 9-10, 10:00am-5:00pm
Instructor: Aidan Garrity
 
Students will create a tomahawk using the slit and drift method. The instructor will also demonstrate the wrap and weld method and explain the variations. Topics covered will include forming the shape of the head, drifting the eye, fitting a handle, grinding and polishing the bit, heat treating and sharpening.
 
 
The Bowie Knife Workshop
Thursday – Monday, October 21-25, 10:00am-5:00pm
Instructor: Mace Vitale
 
Make a Bowie knife in this 5-day intensive workshop in the GAC forge. Learn the ins and outs of forging, grinding and heat treating this iconic blade. Students will also create a guard and handle using steel and wood. Attention will be made to the feel and balance of these knives as well as the edge geometry and performance.
Making Cooking Utensils Workshop
Thursday – Monday, October 30-31, 10:00am-4:00pm
Instructor: Marsha Trattner
 
Learn the basic skills to make useful kitchen and BBQ utensils, emphasizing hand forging and individual expression. Transform steel round, square and flat stock, as well as sheet metal, into your choice of bottle openers, hooks, bowls, cheese knives, spoons, egg spoons, skewers, steak turners, BBQ forks, spatula, ladle or small pan.

Looking for a fun night out with friends or family? You can attend our Friday Night Pottery Workshop or create your own event!
 
Create Your Own Party
We can create a party that matches your interest (like painting, ceramics, drawing, mixed media and so much more) and introduces all your guests to a creative art project. Your get-together will be a lot of fun and you’ll end up with a work of art. The cost is $25 per person for 2 hours; material fees are not included. View the 73rd Annual Juried Exhibition and Sale of work by the Guilford Art League, September 13 – October 2. Featuring a multi-media exhibition of works by over 100 Connecticut artists. Juror: Lenny Moskowitz. Gallery hours: Monday – Saturday, 10am-4pm, Sunday 12-4pm.

Save the date for GAC’s annual Soup for Good event, Sunday, November 21, pickup 2-4pm. Tickets are $40 and include a handmade bowl by GAC potters, choice of homemade soups, bread, wine and a sweet. The GAC Holiday Shop will also be open that day, and participants will receive a coupon to shop.
