Guilford Art Center is pleased to present Something’s Missing, a new exhibition by ceramic artist and Guilford Art Center Artist-in-Residence Casey Potts. The exhibition will also feature work by recent Guilford Art Center ceramics students and members of Wet Clay Works in New Haven, and will be on view in the Center’s Gallery from August 12 – 30, 2026. There will be a free public opening reception Sunday, August 16 from 2:00 – 4:00pm.
At first glance, Something’s Missing feels like a mystery. For Potts, the answer has evolved over time, becoming a deeply personal exploration of absence, connection, growth, and community. The exhibition reflects on the spaces left by people we miss, moments that change us, dreams that evolve, and chapters that quietly come to an end.
Over the past two years as a resident artist at Guilford Art Center, Potts has experienced significant personal and artistic growth. During a challenging period in her life, she found unexpected support from friends, fellow artists, students, and the broader ceramic community.
“When I was navigating a deeply difficult family problem, one of the things I felt most strongly was the absence of community,” said Potts. “What I didn’t expect was how many people would step in with kindness, encouragement, and support. They didn’t erase what was missing, but they helped fill a space that had begun to feel impossible to carry alone. That experience changed the way I think about both art and community.”
Inspired by that experience, Potts invited members of her ceramic community to participate in the exhibition. Alongside her own work, Something’s Missing features ceramics by recent Guilford Art Center students and members of Wet Clay Works in New Haven. The exhibition brings together artists at different stages of their creative journeys, united by themes of absence, resilience, and connection.
“Something’s Missing isn’t just my story — it’s ours,” Potts said. “Every person carries an absence. By bringing artists together under one exhibition, I wanted to create a space that celebrates not only the work we make, but the people who stand beside us while we make it.”
Casey Potts is a ceramic artist whose work explores the mystery, whimsy, and hidden beauty of the ocean. A graduate of Southern Connecticut State University with a Bachelor of Science in Ceramics, Potts has spent more than a decade working with clay. Her work is shaped by personal experiences and a lifelong fascination with the sea, using ceramics to tell stories of curiosity, resilience, and finding beauty in the unknown.
An opening reception will be held on Sunday, August 16 from 2:00 – 4:00 pm at Guilford Art Center. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.
