It’s not coincidence that William Mace Vitale, or “Mace” as he prefers to be called, is a bladesmith whose middle name is also that of a medieval weapon used to cause blunt force trauma in early 3200 B.C., which is created by forging metal.
“Just ironic, I guess,” said Vitale, a 47-year-old member of the American Bladesmith Society, Guilford Art Center instructor and recently-awarded $10,000 champion of a History Channel TV show called Forged in Fire.
