Develop confidence in stone setting in this two-day, hands-on workshop focused on foundational techniques and precision at the bench. Students will learn how to prepare settings and securely set stones using a variety of methods: bezel, tube, flush, and prong setting. Through guided demonstrations and step-by-step instruction, participants will practice each technique while gaining clear understanding of tools and methods. Practice work will be done in copper or brass, with each participant completing one finished piece in sterling silver that incorporates one or more stone setting techniques. This workshop is ideal for people with some metalsmithing experience looking to build technical stone setting skills and transition into more advanced work.

Make a Silver Ring with Bezel-Set Stone

Students will form a ring band from silver wire or sheet metal, fabricate and solder a custom bezel, learn to set a cabochon stone, and polish their finished ring. Students may bring a favorite cabochon stone and any silver they would like to use. The instructor will have silver wire and sheet available, as well as a selection of cabochon stones for purchase. Material fee of $40-$80 payable in class to the instructor. Material prices are subject to change with metals market.

Lamp Worked Glass Beads Workshop

Students will learn to use a torch to melt glass rods, creating personalized colorful glass beads. Many glass decorating techniques will be demonstrated, including enamels, metal foils, flowers and more.

Creating Gemstone Stacker Rings Workshop

Design and create your own set of handcrafted gemstone stacker rings in this one-day workshop focused on texture, form, and personal style.Students will fabricate multiple bands while learning techniques such as forming, soldering, texturing, basic cabochon stone setting, and finishing. Three gemstones will be provided per student; with copper, brass, and sterling silver, students will leave with a finished set of 5 stacker rings (3 with stones and 2 metal bands) that can be mixed & matched. This workshop is ideal for beginners and those with some prior experience looking to explore design and introductory stone setting. Please wear closed-toed shoes.

Bangles & Rings Workshop

Create bangles, cuff bracelets, and rings in this hands-on workshop. Shape and solder wire rings and bangles, hammer for texture, and add decorative wire details. Cuff bracelets will be formed from textured sheet metal. Take home your handmade pieces—perfect as gifts! Instructor will provide brass, bronze and copper wire and sheet metal, and a limited amount of silver wire. Materials cost: approximately $20-40 depending on silver usage.

Try Your Hand at Metalsmithing Workshop

Curious about Metalsmithing? This one-day workshop offers a hands-on introduction to
jewelry making, with a focus on creating simple, wearable rings.
Students will learn core techniques including sawing, forming, soldering, and finishing
while working with brass, copper, and sterling silver. With step-by-step guidance, each
participant will complete one or two handcrafted rings to take home.
This workshop is ideal for beginners looking to explore metalsmithing in a relaxed,
supportive setting. It also provides a strong foundation for those interested in
continuing into 8-week jewelry program. Please wear closed-toed shoes.

Stonesetting with Silver Metal Clay

Prerequisite: at least one other metal clay class or workshop. Take your silver Metal Clay designs to the next level! Add color and brilliance to your pieces by learning to set natural and lab-grown stones in silver metal clay.

Learn which stones can be fired in the kiln, and how to flush-set stones to fire in metal clay. Learn the special considerations for bezel setting stones and pre-formed settings. Use of the slip-syringe for setting will be covered. Channel setting and prong setting will be included as time permits. Students should be able to complete and take home at least 2 pieces of their unique silver and colored stone jewelry.

Materials fee* of approx. $155. is payable at class. Materials fee includes sufficient metal clay lump and syringe, supplies and handouts to complete class projects. Inexpensive faceted and cabochon stones, pre-formed settings and additional metal clay will be available for purchase at the workshop.
Basic metal clay tool kit, including portable work-surface, are required and will not be provided.

A small tool kit may be rented in class for $3.00.

Materials fee of $120.00 is payable to instructor at class and includes metal clay, use of tools, supplies and handouts, this fee is subject to change with the cost of materials on the metals market. This class has a required materials list.

Guided Independent Studies In Metals

This class is structured for students with metalworking experience to focus on their own interests. Students will select and design their own projects and receive guidance to execute them. Focus will be on enriching design skills and addressing artistic intent.  

Intermediate Metalsmithing: Session B

Metals and Jewelry Classes

Building on foundational metalsmithing skills developed in an intro jewelry class, this intermediate-level course emphasizes precision, design development, and expanded stone-setting techniques. Students will refine soldering, fabrication, and finishing methods while creating complex instructor-guided projects. Topics may include advanced fabrication, surfaces treatments, forming techniques, and a variety of stone setting techniques. This course may be repeated, as techniques and project focus will vary from session to session. Some experience required. Please note: NO class 8/5
