Updated Time for Middle School Drop-In Workshop

Free Workshops for Middle Schoolers on GPS Early Dismissal Wednesdays
Wednesday, Jan 24 and March 27, 1:15 – 3:15pm

Join us for this new program to coincide with Wednesday early dismissal days at Adams and Baldwin Middle Schools. Students are welcome to drop in between 1:15 – 3:15pm, when GAC instructor Carole Firth leads an art project for the afternoon. Students can also do independent exploration with materials on hand. Take an afternoon to explore your creativity.
No need to register. FREE.

CLAY EXPLORATIONS WORKSHOP
Saturday, February 3, 10:00am-12:00pm
Instructor: Claudia Mathison
Let’s explore with clay! Think animals, pots and plaques. Learn new techniques including pinch and pull, slab, cross hatching and slip making. Self-hardening clay will be used for all projects. Fee payable with tuition $5. Tuition $30; Members $27.

FEBRUARY VACATION: CLAY ANIMALS IN THEIR HABITAT WORKSHOP
Monday, February 19, 9:00am-12:00pm
Instructor: Claudia Mathison
Mold and carve your favorite animals and build a habitat where they can play, rest, eat and hide. You’ll use self-hardening clay, cardboard, papers, pipe cleaners, gems and more. Bring your imagination and a snack. Fee payable with tuition $10. Tuition $45; Members $40.50.

PAINTING EXTRAVAGANZA; SESSION B
4 Tuesdays beginning February 6, 4:00-6:00pm
Instructor: Amy Peters
Students will experiment with watercolor, tempera and acrylic paints. We will make figurative and abstract paintings on paper and canvases. We’ll look at the work of painters from the history of art, including Takashi Murakami, Jean-Michel Basquait, Damien Hirst and Barbara Kruger.

FEBRUARY VACATION: STILL LIFE PAINTING WORKSHOP
Tuesday, February 20, 9:00am-12:00pm
Instructor: Claudia Mathison
Using watercolor pencils and canvas students will draw from a still life and learn a new way of seeing the ordinary objects around them. Perspective, watercolor painting techniques, and proper materials will be discussed. Fee payable with tuition $10. Tuition $45; Members $40.50.

CLAY HOUSES: BUILD AN ADOBE HOUSE WORKSHOP
Saturday, February 3, 1:00-4:00pm
Instructor: Claudia Mathison
Learn about a traditional New Mexican Adobe house and design and build one using self-hardening clay. Slab, pinch and carving techniques will be covered as well as methods to construct interior items. Fee payable with tuition $5.00. Tuition $45; Members $40.50

TEENS

TEEN BLACKSMITHING SESSION B: 4 Tuesdays beginning Feb 6
TEEN BLACKSMITHING SESSION C: 4 Tuesdays beginning March 5
3:30-5:30pm
This class will teach students basic forging techniques. Students will learn how to build and maintain a coal fire, and use the new skills to make several small projects such as hooks, fire pokers, and hand forged jewelry. Students will need safety glasses, leather work gloves (welding gauntlets not needed) and should wear jeans, a non-flammable cotton shirt and/or jacket, and closed-toed boots or leather shoes. Our forge is an outdoor building that is only semi-enclosed; please dress accordingly. Fee payable with tuition $10. Tuition $200; Members $180.
