As we enter our final summer month, we aren’t slowing down at GAC. We have a range of adult workshops coming up that will offer fun and educational experiences. From blacksmithing to metals to painting, we have something to inspire you.

BLACKSMITHING

OPEN FORGE WORKSHOP; SESSION B
4 Wednesdays beginning Aug 2, 6:00-9:00pm
Instructor: Mace Vitale

This 4 session workshops offers experienced bladesmiths and blacksmith students the chance to continue projects or start something new under the guidance of a working smith. Projects will be tailored to the individual students. Pre-requisite of beginner class in black/bladesmithing. Tuition $270; Members $243 plus $20 materials fee.

FORGE YOUR OWN HAMMER WORKSHOP
Saturday-Sunday, August 5-6, 10:00am-4:00pm
Instructor: Aidan Garrity

Students will learn to forge their own hammers and make and mount handles.
Tuition $300; Members $270 plus $50 materials fee.

INTRO TO THE HAND FORGED BLADE WORKSHOP; SESSION B
Saturday-Sunday, August 19-20, 10:00am-5:00pm
Instructor: Aidan Garrity

This workshop covers the basics of forging, grinding, heat treating and sharpening of a small utility knife. The instructor will discuss fit and finish, overall knife design, how to sharpen and care for knives, and how to begin making knives on your own.
Tuition $350; Members $315 plus $45 materials fee.

JEWELRY FROM THE FORGE WORKSHOP
Saturday-Sunday, August 26-27, 10:00am-4:00pm
Instructor: Marsha Trattner

Learn to make unique jewelry in a unique way – from forged steel. This class will teach you hand forging techniques to transform steel into rings, necklaces and cuffs.
Tuition $385; Members $346.50 plus $45 materials fee.

PAINTING & DRAWING

TRY YOUR HAND AT PAINTING & DRAWING WORKSHOP; SESSION B
Saturday, August 12, 10:00am-1:30pm
Instructor: Scott Paterson

This workshop is geared towards the “absolute adult beginner” to come learn the basics of painting and drawing in a supportive, judgement-free session. Spend the morning in the GAC studios and learn about basic techniques, materials and approaches to working creatively in two dimensions. Come discover your creative potential.
Tuition $45.50; Members $40.95. Fee payable with tuition $5.

METALS

SPOONS IN A DAY WORKSHOP
Saturday, August 19, 10:00am-4:00pm
Instructor: Joy Raskin

Spoons are surprisingly easy to make and create your own for the holidays.We will make a simple spoon using wire for the handle and a piece of sheet metal that we will dome to make a spoon bowl and then solder onto a wire handle. Hammer textures can be added to create a more unique handles. In one day, you can have your own custom-made serving spoon for any occasion. Instructor will provide materials for students to purchase. Estimate cost of materials $20 to $50

SILVER RING WITH A BEZEL SETTING WORKSHOP
Sunday, August 220, 10:00am-4:00pm
Instructor: Joy Raskin

We will make a silver ring band out of wire or sheet metal, and then make a bezel to set a cabochon stone. The bezel will be soldered to the ring, cabochon will be set and the ring polished. Students can bring in a favorite stone, or any silver they have. Instructor will have silver wire and sheet, plus cabochons of assorted sizes for students to purchase. Estimated cost of materials – $10 to $30

SPECIAL INTEREST

PAPER TOYS WORKSHOP (for adults!)
Saturday, August 5, 1:00-4:00pm
Instructor: Anne Benkovitz

Students will draw, color, cut, and construct custom, 3-D paper characters or objects using the provided blank cardstock templates, or use pre-printed, color paper toy templates sourced from illustrators, designers, and published paper toy books. The instructor will provide markers, colored pencils, crayons, paint to color in the toys, as well as glue, tape, brushes, bone folders, scissors, paper punches, hobby knives, rulers, and cutting mats for toy assembly. A list of recommended paper toy websites and books for further exploration will be provided. Fee payable with tuition $15.
