“Over the past year at Guilford Art Center I have been creating work using mainly low fire earthenware clay, slips and underglaze that link composite sculptural forms with colorful surfaces, resulting in whimsical, functional pieces. Each work functions in space as a piece of designed ware, incorporating pattern and color in the surface decoration, allowing me to address painterly and sculptural issues in the functional object. I am intrigued by the challenge of creating an animated and cohesive ensemble, marrying form and pattern across every element of an object or set. Thinking about how a piece connects or sits on the surface of a table also interests me; I aim to make work that is visually light and that sits in an unexpected or unusual way.” — Victoria Burnham
