Rendering Animals in Pencil, Ink, and Paint
Work from a photo to create an animal portrait, progressing from pencil to ink and finishing with acrylic or oil paint. Students will build drawing and painting skills through guided instruction, class critiques, and individual feedback. Photos will be provided, or bring an 8×10 printed photo in both color and black-and-white. Suitable for beginner to intermediate artists. This class has a required materials list.
Exploring Colored Pencils Workshop
Using colored pencils is not just about simply coloring in a drawing; it’s about learning the many different ways to use them to enhance your work. These are some tips that can help you along. Start light and build up to darker shades; blend your colors for great effects. One can work in a sketchy style or pursue a more final, burnished look . There are many more approaches to learn about and demos will be given by the instructor. This class has a required materials list.
Drawing In Pen & Ink Workshop
It’s all about the beauty of line and line representation when you work in pen and ink. Your pen will lend itself to delicate line work when you use Speedball pens, nibs, and Higgins Inks. Cross hatching, hatching, and stippling will be demonstrated by the instructor. It’s a great way to work when drawing landscapes, trees, florals and more. This class has a required materials list.
Portrait Drawing Workshop
Ever want to draw someone’s portrait, but were unable to figure out where to start? In this class, you will learn the guidelines for creating a successfully executed human portrait. The curriculum will cover human portrait proportions, measurements, and shading, as well as creating natural looking hair using a variety of pencils and shading techniques. Instructor will provide photos and handouts. This class has a required materials list.
Portrait Drawing: Revolutionary Figures
Inspired by the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, students will create a successfully executed portrait of a historical figure with easy to follow measurements, blending and shading using a variety of pencils and shading techniques. Instructor will provide photos and handouts. Student provided photos need instructor approval. This class has a required materials list.
Portraits People/Pets
Learn the guidelines for creating a successfully executed human portrait. The curriculum will cover human portrait proportions, measurements, and shading, as well as creating natural looking hair using a variety of pencils and shading techniques. You will also learn the tricks of how to draw a pet portrait, including how to render the expression in the eyes and the softness of the fur or feathers. Instructor will provide photos and handouts. Student provided photos need instructor approval. This class has a required materials list.
Painting Or Drawing The Portrait
Become more confident as a portraitist and capture the personality of your subject in your art. Students already confident in a medium other than graphite pencil (e.g. oil, acrylic, pastels, etc.) should feel free to bring them to class. Otherwise, prepare to draw with pencil and bring a 9 x12 sketch pad, a few soft pencils (anything from 6B to 9B), and, preferably, a kneaded eraser.
Drawing For All
Students will draw with graphite pencil, learning about line, dark and light values, composition and more. We will turn the ordinary into the sublime, working from a still life (and other things) of each student’s own design. Please bring a few soft pencils (6B to 9B) and a 9 x12 sketch pad to the first class. Please note: no class 01/19.
Creative Comics 8/3-7 Week 7
If you have an interest in comic books, creating character driven stories and like to draw, this class is for you! Whether you love Super-heroes, Sci-fi, Manga, Fantasy or the Sunday Funnies, the structure within is all the same. Students will learn about storytelling and pacing, page layout, character design, drawing and composing for comics, simple perspective, inking techniques and some tips on lettering their comics. A personal sketchbook is recommended.
Character Creation 8/3-7 Week 7
Do you want to learn how to make great characters for animation, comics, picture books, games and fantasy? Learn everything you need to know to bring the characters you imagine to life. We will use expression, color, shape, movement and design and discuss making costumes and clothing that work. Students will learn the standards used by animators and artists to create several characters. This will be a fun experience for those that like to draw and students will also get to build a model of one of their characters. A personal sketchbook is recommended.
