Drawing with charcoal is a great way to learn about light and dark shading, form, and other techniques. Once a drawing tool for the great masters, we will draw and blend with specific charcoal supplies. Explore still-life set ups, study hands, eyes, and much more. This moody medium allows you to show off new skills as well as learn how to “control” charcoal. This class has a material list.

Spring Celebration of Crafts Around the World

This new class explores crafts from different corners of the world while celebrating the spirit of spring and themes of new growth and new beginnings. Students will create art inspired by global traditions, such as a New Zealand koru spiral necklace based on the unfurling fern frond. Projects may include a selection of international crafts like lantern making, printmaking, weaving, painting, clay work, and wax resist techniques, offering a hands-on introduction to art from a variety of cultures.

Paint your own mythical fantasy scene or character on canvas. Enjoy guided instruction in a relaxed, social atmosphere with all materials included. No experience necessary. Perfect for a girls’ night out or a creative date night!

Try Your Hand At Painting & Drawing Workshop: Session A

This workshop is geared towards the "absolute adult beginner" to come learn the basics of painting and drawing in a supportive, judgement-free session. Spend the morning in the GAC studios and learn about basic techniques, materials and approaches to working creatively in two dimensions. Come discover your creative potential.

Upcycled Dioramas and Sculpture

Drawing

Using recycled and found materials, students will transform everyday objects into imaginative dioramas and sculptures. Projects may include tiny houses, castles, creatures, story scenes, and functional creations, incorporating natural materials and mixed media such as paint and clay. This class encourages creativity, storytelling, and hands-on exploration of form, texture, and three-dimensional design.

Painting Or Drawing The Portrait

Become more confident as a portraitist and capture the personality of your subject in your art. Students already confident in a medium other than graphite pencil (e.g. oil, acrylic, pastels, etc.) should feel free to bring them to class. Otherwise, prepare to draw with pencil and bring a 9 x12 sketch pad, a few soft pencils (anything from 6B to 9B), and, preferably, a kneaded eraser.

Students will draw with graphite pencil, learning about line, dark and light values, composition and more. We will turn the ordinary into the sublime, working from a still life (and other things) of each student’s own design. Please bring a few soft pencils (6B to 9B) and a 9 x12 sketch pad to the first class. Please note: no class 05/25

Drawing Wild and Exotic Animals

Take a virtual drawing adventure to foreign lands where wild and exotic animals roam. Whether it’s fur or feathers, learn the tricks of how to draw a realistic wild animal in a variety of poses, including how to convey the expression in the eyes, the softness of fur or the lightness of the feathers using pencils. Instructor will provide photos and handouts. Student provided photos are acceptable but require instructor approval. Demonstrations, one-on-one attention and class critiques. This class has a required materials list.

Art & Literature Series: Art of Classic Fairytales

Book Arts

Explore the world of fairyland through art projects inspired by beloved magical stories such as Thumbelina, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, Cinderella, and The Frog Prince. Children will also have the opportunity to create their own fairy tales.

Create talking animals, magical towers and castles, mysterious witches, helpful fairy godmothers, fairy princesses and princes, wands, and tiny fairy houses. We will incorporate natural objects and work with clay, paint, and many other mixed-media materials in our projects.

Character Creation 8/3-7 Week 7

Drawing Classes

Do you want to learn how to make great characters for animation, comics, picture books, games and fantasy? Learn everything you need to know to bring the characters you imagine to life. We will use expression, color, shape, movement and design and discuss making costumes and clothing that work. Students will learn the standards used by animators and artists to create several characters. This will be a fun experience for those that like to draw and students will also get to build a model of one of their characters. A personal sketchbook is recommended.
